The One Shot Charlies boys describe themselves as "a custom only tattoo studio specialising in traditional western and oriental style work." Located in Stourbridge, just outside Birmingham, UK, they are three: David Watt, Lee Pound and R.S. Fox.
In our interview at the London tattoo convention, they place themselves firmly in the "traditional and old school" camp, with specialties in both Japanese tattoos – one talks of his proficiency in koi and dragons. Another states he's of the Western tradition with a speciality in Old School sailor tattoos.
Discussions of first tattoos and how they each got into the business follow. One describes how he did his first tattoo, a skull decorated with tribal patterns, on "a big biker drug dealer type guy" and refuses to name the man he was apprenticed to, waving off the question with his cigarette and laughing. Another talks of a two year apprenticeship and how his very first tattoo was on himself, a tiny star that he poked in by hand on his lower leg. Giggling, he says "that's probably the best star I've ever done!" Finally, one of these guys won't expose his first tattoo – a tribal work – to the camera, for a reason delivered with a chipper grin - "cause he's not getting his cock out..!"
